Life is adventure, whether going across
oceans or across town, and the spirit is quickened with the discovery of
new vistas, new people, and new things to learn about.
Nubble Lighthouse, Ogunquit, Maine
The lighthouse sits perched on an island of
rock just a few hundred yards from Ogunquit's shore. To resupply,
the keeper must launch a boat and row or motor to the mainland.
Stark white, with dark green trim, the lighthouse evokes an austere and
proper image of New England.

Market Lady
Cleveland's West Side Market is filled with
produce stands such as this one. Fresh fruits and vegetables
both common and exotic line the central aisle. Vendors call
out their wares and shout, "Who's Next?" Shoppers of every
nationality and age crowd the walk. The market has something for
everyone.

The Survivor
This lone tree, twisted and shaped by the
storms of central New Hampshire, has managed to hold its own on a narrow
spit of land reaching out into Lake Sunapee. Mount Sunapee with ski
slopes gouging its flanks, stands guard in the distance.

The Tetons
Rising abruptly from the valley floor, the
Tetons tower thousands of feet into the air in a majestic display of
beauty. Seen here from a forest fire access road near Jackson,
Wyoming, you can almost smell the clean air and hear the jays squawking as
you gaze northward toward Yellowstone.

Cuyahoga Tugs
The Cuyahoga is one of America's shortest
rivers, but it serves as a highway for hundreds of freighters and ore
boats each year. Sturdy tugs help mammoth ships negotiate the
narrow, twisting course from entrance to the huge steel mills upriver.
The river is spanned by a variety of large bridges which can turn or lift
out of the way of approaching ships.

Cumberland Falls
Cumberland Falls, the "Niagara of the
South", spans the Cumberland River in southeastern Kentucky. This
image comes from a photo taken by friends who vacationed there.

Canoeing on Lake Sunapee
This elderly couple canoes along the
western shore of Lake Sunapee, New Hampshire. Early in the morning,
before the motorboats and waterskiers crowd the lake and stir the quiet
waters, the lake is still and peaceful, the morning calm broken only by
the occasional call of a loon, or a lake trout jumping for an
early-morning mayfly.
